When can you label a bath and body product organic?
I was recently asked by a colleague: When is it appropriate to label a product as organic? Is it okay to label a product as organic if one or two out of the 10 ingredients you use is organic? This is a really good question, with a complicated answer. The current label of "organic" is truly only regulated and officially recognized as applying to food and agriculture. If a product is not sporting one of the green USDA Organic certification symbols, then there is actually little official regulation that can stop a business from using the Organic label. Businesses like Burt's Bees get around that by specifying what percentage of their ingredients are organic; personally, I've become more careful as time goes on to be very specific in my labeling, stressing that I use mostly certified organic ingredients in my products - because some things just aren't available in an certified organic form. If, for example, you were making a soap and using mostly organic ingredients but a fragrance oil, you could say "made with organic ingredients" and still be technically correct, although not as transparent on the label as someone as eco-concerned as myself might like. It's a really fuzzy place to be right now, until the FDA and USDA hammers down more tightly on the labeling and certification. If you want more info, a good place to start is the Organic Consumers Association: http://www.organicconsumers.org/bodycare/index.cfm. |
